“Every good story needs a villain.
But the best villains are the ones you secretly like.”
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…the games have only just begun.
Will you hate me if I say this was legendary? Because this 100% lived up to the title.
The first thing that I needed after finishing this book was a cold shower, you guys, this book is HOT. The second thing I need is either A) a time machine to transport me to next year or B) the third book immediately in my hands. Either one will do the job, just saying. I thought I had this book figured out but I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. Dammit I should have known that things are never as they seem in the world of Caraval, I mean we’re only warned about what? A thousand times. So I really should have known better.
I was super excited for Legendary mainly because it is told from Tella’s POV and I’m borderline in love with her. At the end of Caraval we find out that Tella may have gotten herself in over her head with bargains and debts she owes to not only Legend but a mysterious friend as well. I was not, however, expecting this book to literally pick up the morning after Caraval ends, so I was double the amount of thrilled upon starting this.
Tella finds herself thrown into another game of Caraval, only this time it’s real… or is it? WHO THE HECK KNOWS?!?!?! The stakes are higher than ever because if she wins she will finally find her mother and come face to face with Legend. But she also must find Legend’s true identity and tell her “friend” who he is for… purposes. As usual no spoilers, so its about to get hella vague up in here. One choice betrays the other and you guys I was S W E A T I N G by the end of this book because I no idea how it was going to end or what path Tella would choose.
Here’s a few of things I loved:
- Who Legend really is, even though I did guess it, I am on cloud nine!
- At one point I was so skeptical I thought Scarlett was Legend, that’s how much your mind will race while reading this
- We get a new setting and it was the bomb DOT COM and 10/10 on that world building
- The tension between Dante & Tella was through the roof, hence why I needed a cold shower after this
- So many twists and turns and magic your head will spin
- We get introduced to a new character, Jacks, and I LOOOOOVED him
- Although don’t worry I’m still Team Dante & Tella forever & always
- Sister love is always a blast
The one thing I had a small issue while reading this was how many times we were basically reminded what Tella’s tasks were and what she would lose if she failed. It became super redundant after a while. Other than that I have zero complaints.
All in all, it’s safe to say I loved this more than Caraval. There’s just something about Tella that I absolutely adore and I’m so happy we were able to go on this epic, magical, tantalizing journey with her. Now excuse me while I go take that cold shower and pine over the next book.
Until next time!
