ARC Review: Serpent & Dove

“There are some things that can’t be changed with words. Some things have to be seen. They have to be felt.”

Rating: 5/5 stars
Format: e-ARC
Release Date: September 3, 2019

Thank you HarperTeen for sending me an e-ARC in exchange for a honest review!

Synopsis

40024139Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible unionโ€”holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

The Verdict

Yes, my friends, you read that correctly. I rated this book FIVE stars and immediately put this on my favorites shelf on Goodreads. Who even am I? Seriously please PICK THIS UP. I can’t even remember the last time I was so into a fantasy series that I ripped through the book in practically one sitting but here we are and now I need the second book immediately!

If you like witches, enemies to lovers, and forbidden love – theres a new couple in town sure to sweep you off your feet. The whole witch/witch hunter forced into an arranged marriage worked SO WELL for this story. This was also one of the rare instances where I was sucked in by the world-building which almost never happens. ย The author puts her own spin to the french witch trials and creates a stunning debut novel that will leave you swooning and flying through this in no time.

What else is there to love?

๐Ÿ“ˆย Character growth. A++ all the stars and feels, I am dead. Both of the characters grew tremendously throughout the story. It’s no surprise they have some MASSIVE secrets their keeping from one another which will eventually come to light and when then do *swoons* it’s perfection.

๐Ÿง™๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธย Witches. I did mention that, right? Plus the magic system in this is complex and so well thought out.

โค๏ธย The romance. This is the perfect amount of slow burn and enemies to lovers that doesn’t overshadow the story in any way. There is one sex scene that is on the more mature side for a YA novel. Not gonna lie, I totally looked like the kombucha girl second guessing herself when I was reading it. Some people have said that because of this the book isn’t YA but the author confirmed on Twitter that it in fact is & that sometimes teenagers have sex.

๐ŸŒชย Plot Twists.ย And oh so many of them. I’m going to be totally honest with you I barely saw any of them coming and my jaw was on the floor. I love a book that can just continue to wow me time and time again and it’s usually so hard for me to find a book that I don’t find to be predictable. So, this was just like the pretty bow on a beautifully wrapped present.

๐Ÿ”šย No cliffhanger. You read that right! While there is going to be a second book there is no major cliffhanger that will have your hurl your book across the room in agony of waiting a whole year for the next book. Don’t worry though, the characters DEFINITELY have their work cut out for them in the next book, so you’ll probably think about selling an organ or two to get it earlier.

All in all, you really just need to read this. I mean, not only is the cover gorgeous but the story on the inside is even better. This was such a breath of fresh air from the fantasy novels I’ve read that all seem to mesh together and I absolutely cannot wait for the second book!

Until next time,

  1. Okay not having a major cliffhanger at the end of the book makes it sound way better for me! It kills me when I feel like I need to know immediately what happened and don’t get me wrong, cliffhangers are great but I can’t handle them as much! Great review ๐Ÿ˜€ I can’t wait to read this one.

  2. I went to immediately buy the ebook after I saw all the amazing reviews of this on Goodreads yesterday ๐Ÿ˜ It sounds SO GOOD and quite different to any YA fantasy that I’ve read before. I absolutely love your review and if I wasn’t already sold on reading it soonest, knowing that there’s no cliffhanger ending would have me sold lol
