Thank you Feiwel and Friends for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for a honest review!
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?
The Shadows Between Us is described as a Slytherin romance and I could not agree more. This was my first novel from Tricia Levenseller but it absolutely will not be my last, especially considering I have her other books sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be devoured. If you’re like me and love a good fantasy book with ruthless characters, love, lust, deception, and so many betrayals then you absolutely need to save a spot on your bookshelf for this one. This is one of those books where as soon as I finished it I immediately wanted to go back and reread it again because it’s that good.
What I Liked
👸🏻 Alessandra. First of all, we have absolutely no choice but to love her just based off of her first name, my favorite name of all time. Second, she’s ruthless, determined to get what she wants, and doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks about her. I mean, the book literally starts with her explaining how she murdered her ex-boyfriend for breaking up with her. We love a crazy bitch. Also, I absolutely loved how Alessandra had a past of sleeping with other men and basically told the Shadow King if that was a problem he could kindly go fly a kite. Ugh, I just really, really loved her.
🤴🏻 The Shadow King. Again, we have no choice but to love one tortured soul who wants to conquer the world but also believes in equality between men and women. Plus, his best friend is a dog so that’s extra points in my book.
💘 The romance. For a standalone novel this was all the right amount of enemies (one sided), to friends, to lovers. Then when the tension is turned up… it’s TURNED UP if you get what I’m sayin’, afterwards the romance just feels so right between Alessandra and the Shadow King that I would probably get down on my knees and beg the author for more books with the two of them.
🔪 The bad guy…or gal. Even though I did start getting suspicious of who was trying to kill the Shadow King pretty early on, it was still very satisfying because when you find out why they want him dead it’s absolutely and 100% a mindfuck.
What I Didn’t Like
🌎 World-building. This was kind surprising for me. I’m not the type to like overly descriptive worlds, however, I’m also kind of not used to nothing either. In this case, we learn the names of characters in this book but descriptions aside from Alessandra’s clothes are pretty minimal. So, it was a bit odd for me because you literally don’t even the name of the kingdom until more than halfway through the story. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t enough to make me dislike the story but I would lying if I said I didn’t spend a good majority of this book looking and hoping for more world-building because the rest of the book was all so good.
All in all, if you’re looking for a good fantasy story, packed with steamy romance, murder, and so many good quotes mark your calendars because The Shadows Between Us hits shelves this coming Tuesday!
Until next time,
