Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

Hello, bookish friends! 🤩

Can you believe it’s time for the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag already?! I know I can’t. This has been such a weird year so far but despite all the craziness going on in the world I’ve actually had a pretty decent six months of reading. Today we’re going to be talking about the some of the best/worst books that I’ve read during the first half of the year and all the ones in-between. To date I’ve read 48 out of 80 books towards my reading goal for the year so I definitely have a good variety to choose from for my answers.

Let’s dive in!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020

The Hate U Give has been my only five star read of 2020 and I would like to think it’s rightfully so. I’m super stingy with handing out five stars to books unless I find them extremely powerful, thought-provoking, moving in some way, or a book that resonates with me deeply. And while this book isn’t a book I’ll ever be able to “see” myself in since I’m a white woman, it’s still extremely powerful and moving.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020

Although I don’t think this book was as good as Children of Blood and Bone it was still a great action packed sequel and I can’t wait to pick up the final book when it releases.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

This Coven Won't Break (These Witches Don't Burn, #2)

I cannot wait to dive back into this world and be reunited with my favorite gay witches!
I’m hoping to be able to get to this one within the next few weeks now that I finally have a copy of my own.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

31520883. sy475

December, where are you?! After the bombshell of an ending the third book left us on I have been DYING to get my hands on A Sky Beyond the Storm. I’m telling you right now if anything happens to Helene I will be absolutely devastated. Everyone else can die for all I care just not my precious Helene.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

40550366

This really hurts. Never in a million years did I think one of my most anticipated reads of 2020 would turn into my most disappointing. I finished this last night and I have a lot of thoughts so I will definitely have a review up soon. But this was just…not it – especially after how good I thought Serpent & Dove was.

Two equally disappointing runner ups:
Credence by Penelope Douglas – review HERE.
Imagine Me by Tahereh Mafi – too bitter to write a review.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

44414927

Any True Blood fans out there?
This one reads like a mix of True Blood and a more mature version fo ACOTAR. I absolutely devoured and loved this one. I’m planning on picking up the second book fairly soon too since my fantasy slump has finally been kicked to the curb.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR

41721210

Francesca Flores for sure!
It makes me sad that this book get slept on when it came out in January because it was so freaking good. The flavor of this book was out of this world from all the murder, to doing what it takes to survive, to love and friendship, and what will hopefully become an amazing story of revenge in the next installment – this truly had it all. Y’all better believe I will be at the bookstore bright and early when the second book releases and I will buy anything else this author writes in the future.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

Dare I be basic here? I’m going to have to go with Hunt Athalar from House of Earth and Blood…or Crescent City to keep it simple. I am always a sucker for the brooding men who are so lethal they could kill you with barely a flick of their wrist. So honestly, this shouldn’t even be a surprise.

NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER

I loved Shahrzad from The Wrath and the Dawn. She was such a fun yet strong character and I think a huge reason why I loved the story so much. Just like my brooding men, I love me some strong, witty, sarcastic women who you might think are soft, pretty, docile little things but secretly have an entire agenda to take down an enemy, kingdom, or whatever it may be and will do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

44778083

This book got me twice. The first time was when my favorite character died and the second time was the Bryce/Danika “light it up part” at the end.
If you know, you know.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

44588106

This was not an easy read in the slightest but I think it was a really important story. The ending left me pretty happy and satisfied that justice was served and the girls voices who were silenced for a good majority of this book were finally heard and believed.

FAVORITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION

I am going to be completely honest here… I don’t think I’ve watched a full movie in 2020. Unless, I’m physically going to a movie theater I really don’t watch any movies or TV at home. I’d rather be reading or doing other things I enjoy.

FAVORITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR

I had an absolute blast rereading A Court of Thorns and Roses five years after I had first read it and recapturing my thoughts. It was a lot of fun to be able to see the book in a new light knowing everything that would happen in the following books and seeing which of my thoughts stayed the same and which changed.

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR

52735921. sx318 sy475

You ever just see a cover so pretty that you slam all the buttons to pre-order it? Because that’s what happened here. I mean, I definitely am excited to read this when it does come out in October but it’s just so pretty to look at that I couldn’t deny my bookshelves when they asked for a copy 😉.

WHAT BOOK DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

40523458. sy475

I will read this book before 2020 ends.
I will read this book before 2020 ends.
I will read this book before 2020 ends.
NO EXCUSES EVEN THOUGH I AM AFRAID.

And there you have it friends, my 2020 Mid Year Book Freak Out tag!
I’m definitely excited to see where the rest of the year will take me reading wise and hopefully we’ll have plenty more books to talk about on here during the second half of the year!

Until next time,
